VIX Term Structure Notes for Bangkok Session Traders
When the front-month VIX future trades above the third month, the curve is in backwardation—a shape associated with elevated near-term uncertainty. For traders who hold overnight US exposure from Bangkok, this reading belongs on a pre-open checklist alongside any scheduled macro releases.
Contango, where deferred months price higher, often accompanies calmer overnight sessions. That does not mean zero risk; it means regime classification should default to range-bound until an event breaks the pattern.
We keep a printed term-structure sketch in the training room updated weekly. Students compare their own Monday morning notes against the sketch to build habit before relying on live feeds alone.
One limitation: VIX reflects US equity implied volatility. Thai SET names may decouple during local political or earnings clusters. Use the VIX reading as one input, not as a single switch for all positions.
If you track only one number before the Bangkok open, record whether the curve moved from contango to backwardation within the prior US session. That single transition flag has been, in our clinic reviews, more useful than the absolute VIX level alone.
